No, the Tren Maya is not fully operational as of August 2024. While the route from Cancún to Palenque began service in December 2023, the remaining routes connecting destinations in the southern part of the network are expected to be completed and opened by the end of August or mid-September 2024
The passenger service of Tren Maya has a maximum speed of 160 km/h (99.42 mph), while the freight service travels at 120 km/h (75 mph).

Yes, the Tren Maya has National Guard personnel on board the trains and the entire route is monitored by various security corporations and units.
At present, only support animals with the necessary documentation are permitted on the Tren Maya. These animals must be registered prior to boarding to ensure a smooth journey for all passengers.
The maximum allowed luggage dimensions are 55 cm x 40 cm x 25 cm (21.6 in x 15.7 in x 9.8 in), and the weight should not exceed 25 kg (55 lbs).
