Amtrak is an American passenger train system, with routes that connect over 500 destinations in 46 states and three Canadian provinces. Previously to 2020, Amtrak offered three routes: the Adirondack which travels between Montreal and New York; The Maple Leaf, connecting Toronto with New York City; and The Ocean, a route traveling from Montreal to Halifax. In April 2023, Amtrak has resumed its Montreal to New York route.
Cross-Border checklist for Canadians
Amtrak has several routes that cross the borders between Canada and the U.S.A. When crossing the border from Canada to New York by bus, it's important to be prepared.
Here are a few things to keep in mind before your trip.
1. Make sure to have all of your documents in order (a valid passport or other government-issued photo ID, and any necessary visas and permits for travel).
2. If you are planning on visiting for business or pleasure, gather the required documentation ahead of time so that you don’t experience delays at the border.
3. Make sure you're aware of the customs laws specific to the U.S.
4. Remain seated after arriving at the border crossing while Customs and Border Protection officers check documents and passports
5. Be prepared to answer questions about how long you plan to stay in the United States, and why you are traveling. If you are carrying any items that need to be declared for duty or taxes, make sure to do so at this time. Remember to remain courteous and respectful when speaking with border officials and follow their instructions carefully.
It's also important to remember that cell phones must be turned off while crossing the border. Taking pictures of immigration officers or other U.S./Canadian government buildings is prohibited, regardless if it is on the Canadian or American side of the border. Failure to comply can result in fines, detention or deportation.

Amtrak User Reviews
Amtrak receives praise for its friendly and helpful staff, punctuality, comfortable seating with ample legroom, and convenient amenities like charging ports. However, some users noted cleanliness issues and occasional WiFi disruptions. There were also mentions of unexpected track changes and seat assignment concerns for solo female travelers seeking more flexibility in seating arrangements.
There should be a bench for the bus stop to clarify that it is the Amtrak bus as there are other bus services that board there. Our driver informed us of how to open windows in case of emergency and that there were restrooms onboard. She announced every stop but may have needed a microphone as one passenger missed his stop; but the driver went in the station and found out how the passenger could get back to the stop he needed.

First of all, i couldn't hear any of the announcements on train. It was so quiet. Then they closed the washrooms and cafe 15 mins earlier to border crossing which is understandable but the train didn't stop at border for checking and there was no announcement whether the we can use the washrooms or not or when the checking is gonna happen. When we arrive at the Vancouver station we were sitting in the train for 30 mins without knowing whats happening why the doors are not open coz nobody could hear the announcement. I was supposed to arrive at vancouver station at 12:34pm but when i left the train it was 1:50pm that's insane.

Very pleasant and helpful staff. The train was 30 mins late but it was not their fault.

there were two very drunk passengers sitting across the aisle from me for at least half the duration of my trip. After the first one departed from the train the other one sprawled his legs across the aisle for about 25 minutes and was kicking me while he was readjusting himself.

The trip was very smooth & pleasant and the Driver was courteous & superb.
